ESRI client applications and server interoperability
Newer ArcSDE client applications (ArcGIS 9 and ArcIMS 9) are supported with the same
or older vintage servers. However, older client applications (ArcGIS 8.3 and ArcIMS 4.0.1)
are not supported with newer versionsof the ArcSDE 9 server. Direct connect support is
further limited to the same vintage as your client software and host ArcSDE database.
For example, if using ArcGIS 9 with direct connect to a Microsoft SQL Server, the
SQL Server database must be upgraded to an ArcSDE 9 database.
