Installation

ArcSDE and ArcSDE Developer Kit for UNIX
Note: Red Hat Linux and Sun Solaris automatically mount your CD drive. If you need to mount the CD drive, log in as root, then use the command line appropriate to your host UNIX system as follows, where ‹dev› is the name of your CD-ROM device:

HP HP-UX (PA_RISC), mount -F cdfs /‹dev›/cdrom
HP True64 UNIX, mount -r ‹dev›/cdrom
IBM RS/6000 AIX, mount -v 'cdrfs' -r'' -p'' /dev/cd0/cdrom (or use smit)

Note for IBM: -p'' and -'' is a dash, the letter p or r, and two single quotes. If you use a double quote after the -p or -r, it will fail.

  1. Verify that your system meets the system requirements. See the install guide on your individual platform CD for details (install.htm).
  2. Make user the system account installing the ArcIMS software has write permissions to the target install directory.
  3. Navigate to the folder named for the version of ArcSDE you want to install. For example, if installing ArcSDE fro IBM DB2 (64 bit) on an AIX platform, go to the db2_64 folder. Folders without _64 are 32-bit installations.
  4. To start the ArcSDE software installation, type install -load.
  5. Enter the following command: SetupArcIMS
  6. Follow the instructions on the screen. For detailed installation instructions, see the DBMS-specific HTML file on the CD (for instance, if installing ArcSDE for IBM DB@, read install_db2.htm).

ESRI Software Documentation Library
Insert the CD in the CD drive to automatically start the setup program (or navigate to the setup.exe file and double-click). Follow the instructions on the screen.

ESRI client applications and server interoperability
Newer ArcSDE client applications (ArcGIS 9 and ArcIMS 9) are supported with the same or older vintage servers. However, older client applications (ArcGIS 8.3 and ArcIMS 4.0.1) are not supported with newer versionsof the ArcSDE 9 server. Direct connect support is further limited to the same vintage as your client software and host ArcSDE database. For example, if using ArcGIS 9 with direct connect to a Microsoft SQL Server, the SQL Server database must be upgraded to an ArcSDE 9 database.

Acquiring your license file
You will need a new license file for ArcGis 9. See how to get a license.
