ArcView is NOT the same as ArcGIS.
ArcGIS provides more features for the same disk space.
All you need for ArcGIS is a hardware key.

1. Install
• Locate your registration number(s). In order to get registration number(s),
please send an email to esri-license@osc.edu.
• Insert the ArcView installation media.
• Plug in the hardware key if a hardware key is required.
• Select install ArcGIS Desktop.
• Follow the installation instructions to install the software to the
desired location.
• For detailed installation instructions on various platforms and requirements,
refer to the install.htm file located under the Product folder on the installation
media.
2. Register
• Select Register Now.
Note: To register at a later time, click Exit. When you want to register, navigate
to Start > Programs > ArcGIS > Desktop Administrator, select the Register
Single Use and Extensions folder, and click Register Now.
3. Automatic Registration
This is the recommended method and requires the computer to be connected to
the Internet.
• Click I have installed ArcView and need to register the software.
Note: If you have already registered and received an authorization file in the
*.esu9 format, select I have received an authorization file from ESRI and am
now ready to finish the registration process.
• Select Register now using the Internet.
Or
4. Manual Registration
Use this method if the computer you are using does not have an Internet connection.
• Select the Register by e-mail or Fax or mail your registration option.
Alternatively, from another machine that has an Internet connection, browse
to service.esri.com, select the Product Registration link, and follow the instructions.
• You will receive an authorization file in a *.esu9 format.
• Save this file to your machine.
• Open the Registration Wizard form the Desktop Administrator and choose
I have received an authorization file from ESRI and am now ready to finish the
registration process.
• Browse to the saved authorization file to complete the registration.
