A Short Course: Using Modeling and Statistics

Background Information

During winter quarter 2001, the Ohio State University implemented a distance learning course that gave teachers access to real science datasets that they could immediately apply to their classroom teaching. The course was given in Summer 2002 again, and it will be a permanent course at OSU in 2002. The course required students to implement at least one use of the data in their classrooms, bringing their experiences and problems back to the class for discussion with other teachers and their instructors/mentors. The materials gave participating teachers experience in using project-based learning using real science data, an introduction to modeling and statistical methods, and helped them organize their own courses or units to utilize these approaches.
