Using Real Data for Science and Math: Urban Sprawl and its Impacts on Rural America

Background Information

OSC co-developed with faculty at Kent State – from the Geography department and the College of Education – a set of problem-based learning exercises relating to earth science, geography, and hydrology.Existing watershed data is utilized to show faculty how to integrate technology into a problem-solving approach to instruction. They are working with faculty in Kent's Geography department that teach these concepts to pre-service teachers and assisting them in designing a course around these materials. They are also serving as instructors and mentors on technology tools and their application to problem-based learning, modeling, and simulation. Content focuses on the use of tools and techniques to gather, analyze, and interpret data, develop descriptions, explanations, predictions, and models using the evidence, and critical thinking required by the national education standards.
