 Thank You!

I'd like to give a big "Thank You!" to all of the staff, teachers, chaperones, speakers, interns, and of course the girls for making this a truly memorable and fun week! I hope you all enjoyed reading the blog as much as I did updating it.

Best of luck to everyone in the future endeavors, and be sure to stay in touch.

Charades, Ice Cream, and Pictures!

Charades, work, and even a little ice cream were all on the agenda for Thursday! The girls started their morning off with a game of charades to help review what they've learned over the past several days, and then spent the majority of the day working on their projects and preparing them for Saturday's presentation. They've also recently been working on creating a website for their projects using HTML and preparing models of their data for the final presentation.

Pictures from yesterday's fun at OSC can of course be found at the YWSI 2006 gallery.

Wednesday Wrap Up

Wednesday the girls spent the day at OSC working on their group projects and learning new programs such as PowerPoint and a modeling suite. Later in the evening there was a career night event back on campus, where the girls were able to meet women from various science, engineering and technology based professions.

Pictures from yesterday's stay at OSC can be found at the YWSI 2006 gallery.

Darby Creek Pictures

The girls enjoyed a day of fun in the sun yesterday as they explored the ecosystem of Darby Creek. Students were issued the task of collecting samples from the creek bed by performing the infamous 'Darby Shuffle' (essentially a shuffle to disturb the rocks and move the creatures out from hiding) to capture the creatures a few feet down stream in waiting nets. Also, numerous measurements were taken to test the quality of the water in Darby Creek, and later the girls will be comparing their data with other results to see how the creek has changed over time. Finally, there was a demonstration by the EPA demonstrating electro-fishing, a technique which stuns the fish momentarily and causes them to swim towards the source of the electricity, and also the creek's numerous and varied species of fish.

The pictures from yesterday's trip to Darby Creek can be found at the YWSI 2006 gallery.

 Gallery Live!

The YWSI 2006 gallery is now online and ready for viewing. Current pictures include shots from the girl's first day here at YWSI doing ice breakers and games, as well as pictures from today as the girls played kickball, learned about the hydrologic cycle, stream analysis, and how to properly collect data for their field trip to Big Darby creek tomorrow.
