Career Night Wednesday, July 30, 2008 Students attend YWSI's Career Night. Students were introduced to various careers in math, science and technology. They heard from graduate and professional students and also had a chance to win prizes in the "career game". Battelle Darby Creek Tuesday, July 29, 2008 Students were issued the task of performing various tests on the creek's water quality and ecosystem to determine the overall health of the stream. Numerous measurements were taken to test the quality of the water in Darby Creek, and later the girls compared their data with former YWSI students' results to see how the creek has changed over time. Also, students performed the infamous 'Darby Shuffle', essentially a shuffle to disturb the rocks and riverbed to move the creatures out from hiding so that they can be captured and analyzed. Finally, there was a demonstration by the EPA of electro-fishing, a technique which stuns the fish momentarily and causes them to swim towards the source of the electricity. This allows for easy capture and analysis before returning the fish back to the stream. Please click on the right or left side of the enlarged images to go forward or back in the gallery.
