Networking Initiatives

Wireless Neighborhood
OSC Networking plays a leading role in the extension of Internet technology services to rural Ohio through the Connecting Rural Ohio Wireless Neighborhood Project.

OSC Networking and The Ohio State University Office of the CIO, with major funding from the American Distance Education Consortium and the Ohio Community Computing Network, are bringing broadband Internet connectivity to the town of New Straitsville, Ohio, from a satellite 23,000 miles out in space.

OSCnet
The OSCnet is being created to provide advanced networking services to support higher education and research in the state of Ohio. The goal of this project is to create a premier network that will enhance research, education, and economic development that will help expand Ohio’s role and reputation in networking technology.

TSIS Satellite Project
OSC Networking, ITEC-Ohio and the OSU Office of the CIO received a $65,000 grant in 2002 from the American Distance Education Consortium (ADEC), to build and operate a Transportable Satellite Internet System (TSIS). This system comprises a small trailer that carries a 1.2 meter diameter dish receiver, plus all related electronics, and can be pulled by any vehicle with a trailer hitch. The TSIS provides 24 ports of 10/100 Ethernet that can connect to any nearby computers or LANs. The total speed of the satellite connection is 1.5 Mbps/sec downlink, and 512Kbps/sec uplink, at guaranteed rates.

Internet2
Internet2 is a consortium being led by over 180 universities working in partnership with industry and government to develop and deploy advanced network applications and technologies, accelerating the creation of tomorrow’s Internet. Just as today’s Internet arose from the academic and federal research networks of the 1980’s, Internet2 is helping to develop and test new technologies that will enable a new generation of Internet applications.

The goal of Internet2 is to bring together institutions and resources to develop new technologies and capabilities that can then be deployed in the global Internet. OSC Networking is the Ohio GigaPOP for Internet2 and provides connectivity to the Internet2 high-performance network.

OSC Networking’s Internet2 services include identifying collaboration possibilities for researchers, fostering partnerships with other Internet2 institutions as well as government and private sector organizations, assisting with funding source identification, developing budgets and equipment assessments, and providing information regarding applications utilizing Internet2. OSC Networking has an Internet2 manager on staff to answer questions and provide access to project resources.

ITEC-Ohio
OSC Networking plays a major role in the national effort to develop and deploy the next generation of Internet technologies through its leadership of the Internet2 Technology Evaluation Center (ITEC-Ohio). Run by and funded by OSC Networking, ITEC-Ohio is a consortium of Ohio universities, government agencies, and corporate partners. Its mission is to examine critical new applications and infrastructure problems in order to meet the emerging academic, engineering, and industrial needs in research, education, government and commerce.

One of the primary goals of ITEC-Ohio is to stimulate research and development in advanced networking technologies and support the transfer of these technologies into products and services for the general public. ITEC-Ohio will act as an evaluation center for technologies, components and services being considered for Internet2 and promote the continued development of high-performance communications infrastructure in Ohio and the rest of the country.
