Hardware Overview
To promote adoption and adaptation of the system, we have posted a recommended system configuration. It is expected that this system will be modified as new improved and cost-effective equipment enters the market.
In addition, the system will support both the dissection simulation and the open-source software used to view and segment data acquired for use in the system. You will need to keep abreast of periodic updates to the software.

Computer System Configuration
The following are hardware configurations by common computer vendors that are capable of running the dissection simulation. The configurations were generated from the vendor's website in December of 2007 and will most likely change over time.

The first two configurations are business class workstations and the third is a home gaming PC. The home PC will be lower in price but may not be as stable as the business workstations. There is some leeway in these configurations but the graphics cards and Firewire (IEEE 1394) are required.
Haptic Interface
PHANTOM Omni Device is required to run dissection simulation software. The Omni is used to emulate the drilling tool normally used in temporal bone dissection. Please contact Lisa Carey (email:lcarey@sensable.com) from Sensable Technologies for a quote.

Binocular Display Device
The Headplay personal cinema system from Headplay is used to emulate the binocular microscope normally used in temporal bone dissection. The binocular display is not required to run the dissection simulation software but is recommended for the study. The Headplay display can be purchased online at http://www.headplay.com/.
Display Device Stand
The Headplay display is normally worn on the head but can but mounted on a stand to more closely emulate the binocular microscope. The display stand can be purchased online at http://www.bhphotovideo.com. The following parts are needed for the display stand:
- Hosa - Short Tripod Boom Stand (Black)
- Mfr # MSB382BLK
- B&H # HOTBSSB
- MIC-EZE - Vertical Locking Microphone Clamp with 5-inch Flexible Gooseneck
- Atlas - Coupling 5/8"F to 5/8"F
Alternative Configurations
The dissection software can be run on hardware other than the components specified above but we recommend using a configuration as close as possible for the study.
- MINIMUM Computer requirements:
- Windows XP based system
- 2.5 GHz processor
- 1 GB RAM
- nVidia Quadro FX 4600 graphics card or GeForce 8800 with
- 320MB of video memory
- 400W power supply
- Firewire (IEEE 1394) interface
- Monitor that supports analog VGA input (emagin display device only supports VGA)
Haptic Interface
The software is designed for the Phantom Omni but will work with all the other force feedback devices from Sensable.
We currently do not recommend running the dissection simulation software on a Windows Vista based system.
