Energy Activities

Combustion of fossil fuels is the main source of energy and is largely responsible for polluting the natural environment. India is the world's seventh largest energy consumer. Coal is the primary fuel for thermal power plants. Gasoline and diesel are the primary fuels for vehicular transport. There is also limited usage of natural gas. USDOE has estimated total primary energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels in India as given in Table 2. The Government of India is under the process of preparation of its Initial Communication, which would provide the data for CO2 emission from coal usage.

The studies being carried out under this project is described here in two parts. Part-I details the emissions from coal fired thermal power plants. Part-II provides the studies related to emissions from road transport.
