Systems ResearchLow-latency gigabit ethernet message passingPrincipal Investigators: P. Wyckoff and D.K. Panda Description: Low-latency gigabit ethernet message passing. Although ethernet is the networking hardware of choice in the commodity computer market, its use in high-performance cluster computing platforms has not met wide acceptance due to its relatively poor performance in terms of latency and bandwidth. This is not all inherent in the medium itself, but rather in the software which has traditionally been used to access the hardware. We plan to significantly improve the characteristics of gigabit ethernet in a cluster, and make feasible the use of this inexpensive and popular networking infrastructure. |
