Batch Processing on OSC Systems
Description
Every year since its inception, OSC has found the top-ranked help topic to
be Batch Processing. Simply put: "How do I run a batch job?". This one-day
course will not only answer that question for *all* OSC machines, but
explain how a user can find out useful information about the batch system
components.
First covered will be the basics: batch file format, job submission, job
status, and return files. The course will then list and detail additional
options that allow the user to find out which queues are available for use,
queue parameters (memory, time limits), queue permissions, etc. The course
will also demonstrate how the PBS batch system can be used interactively (yes,
it is possible). Batch jobs to perform parallel processing will be discussed
in detail. Also, useful environment variables related specifically to the
batch system will be defined and their uses shown.
This course is extremely hands-on. Users will submit and run batch jobs
with different purposes.
If time permits, the batch system software will be broken down into its
component modules for a deeper understanding. How users can modify the
functioning of certain modules will be discussed.
