Shibboleth is being deployed nationally and internationally as a web SSO system to access services hosted both on and off campus. The software leverages institutional identity and access management infrastructures to authenticate individuals and then sends their approved identity information to the local or remote service site for authorization.

Shibboleth is being deployed by OhioLINK to provide a secure, single sign-on for access to library resources and shared multimedia materials.  It's implementation will also facilitate access to other shared resources across Ohio's higher education institutions and to commercial vendors serving the higher education community.

The Ohio Shibboleth 2.0 Training Workshop will provide attendees with technical installation and configuration experience with Shibboleth version 2.0, with an emphasis on the Identity Provider software. Service Provider basics will be covered to provide administrators with enough information to create simple deployments to assist in testing and maintaining their Identity Provider deployments.

Developed for campuses new to Shibboleth, the workshop will offer attendees the chance to:

  • Install prototype Shibboleth identity and service providers components in a virtual machine environment.
  • Hear tips for configuring and running the software in production.
  • Learn about integration with LDAP directories and selected packages.
  • Meet a member of the Shibboleth Project Team and have a chance to influence software development or ask detailed questions.

IMPORTANT

Knowledge of basic identity management concepts and related implementation experience is strongly recommended.

Knowledge of basic Linux command line use and related tools is strongly recommended. Those taking the course should be familiar with the basic UNIX operations shown in this tutorial.

Institutions are encouraged to send a single attendee who is the most likely to be involved in hands-on deployment and maintenance of the Shibboleth software.

The workshop will provide a hosted virtual machine environment for each participant, including a graphical desktop with a browser. Bringing a laptop is optional.

Attendees will be installing, configuring, and testing the software on a private network during the workshop; therefore, e-mail access at the workshop will be unavailable during the sessions.
