OSC is located at 1224 Kinnear Road in Columbus, Ohio. It is on the west campus of The Ohio State University (OSU) in the research area. Directions to OSC can be found at http://www.osc.edu/about/visitOSC.shtml.
Wear comfortable, easy-care clothing that can be layered. Since OSC is air conditioned, it is advisable to bring a sweater or sweatshirt. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, too. On Tuesday, we will participate in an outdoor environmental waterways field trip. For that day, we encourage you to dress for the season. Since it will involve an outdoor experience, please wear old clothing and proper footwear. Other suggestions include binoculars, cameras, field guides (flowers, birds, etc.), insect repellent, old clothing, rain gear, wading shoes, and/or sturdy boots.
On Tuesday the YWSI students will be traveling to Big Darby Creek to perform water quality tests. The information collected will then be analyzed and used to draw conclusions for their final projects. To help prepare for this field trip, all YWSI students should read the information located on the projects page as well as the information on the Darby Creek website at http://www.metroparks.net/batelle.htm.
OSC has reserved a block of rooms in one of the OSU dorms. YWSI participants will stay in the dorm from Sunday (check-in after 3 p.m.) through Saturday (check-out before noon). The dorm will provide bed linens and towels. For more detailed information about housing for YWSI, click on http://conferenceservices.osu.edu/ or contact OSU Summer Conference Housing at 614-292-9725.
Room and board for YWSI is expected to be around $250.00. Breakfasts and dinners will be served in the dorm. Lunches will be provided by OSC.
* Prices quoted as of 2/08. If you are planning to attend and wish to confirm accessibility or request accommodations for persons with disabilities, please call 614-292-6067.
All program activities and lunches will be provided at no cost to the students. The students and their parents should determine the amount of spending money needed for snacks and personal expenditures. Although some snacks will be provided, the Center has vending machines for the students' use.
Full medical and emergency dental services are available to YWSI participants at the Student Health Center (SHC). All services are subject to an office visit fee with additional charges as necessary. Health expenses will be billed directly to the students' parents. Students who need allergy shots during YWSI can have them administered at the SHC with the proper medical documentation and paperwork received in advance. As with other services provided by the SHC, there is a fee for allergy shots.
Participants in YWSI are guests of the State of Ohio and OSU. They are expected to treat university personnel, others affiliated with the program and peers with respect. The students will be working and studying at OSC -- the same place where researchers, members of industry, faculty and staff will be working. It is imperative that students help OSC maintain a professional work environment free of interruptions and distractions. Keep in mind that YWSI will be a more enjoyable event for everyone if we take others into consideration and "Follow the Golden Rule."
Respecting and appreciating diversity is fundamental to OSU's learning environment. For YWSI to be a success, everyone must respect each other regardless of race, creed, culture, religion or sex. As appointed representatives of their schools and communities, YWSI students should respect the contributions and interests of others and treat them with dignity.
