Honolulu, HI -- May 31, 2001 -- The Air Force Research Laboratory announced today that the University of Hawai'i (UH) has been awarded the contract to operate and manage the Maui Supercomputing Center, located at the Maui Research and Technology Park in Kihei. The contract, which will begin October 1, 2001, may be extended for up to 10 years and has a potential value of $181 million. This is the largest single contract award in the history of the University of Hawai'i.
Since 1987, OSC has been providing our clients services in four areas, or functions:
Supercomputing. OSC provides the computational power and storage that scientists need to meet their research goals. Whether researchers need to harness the incredible power of a parallel processor cluster to better understand deep space, a vector processor machine to do weather modeling, or a mid-size shared memory processor system to model the human heart, OSC has the hardware and software solutions to meet their needs.
Research. A staff of high performance computing and networking research experts maintain active research programs in HPC and Networking, Homeland Security and Defense, Environmental Sciences, Engineering and Life Sciences. Our goals are to lead science and engineering research efforts, assist researchers with custom needs and collaborate with regional, national and international researchers in groundbreaking initiatives.
Education. OSC has a national reputation for its training and education programs. Staff teach faculty and student researchers through scientific computing workshops, one-on-one classes, and web-based portal training. Ohio students gain exposure to the world of high performance computing and networking during our annual summer institutes for young women in middle school and for junior and senior high school students. And, the statewide, virtual Ralph Regula School of Computational Science coordinates computational science and engineering education activities for all levels of learning.
Cyberinfrastructure. The Ohio Supercomputer Center’s cyberinfrastructure and software development researchers provide the user community with various high performance computing software options. This variety enables researchers to select parallel computing languages they most prefer, and just as important, it creates a test bed for exploring these systems. By taking a holistic approach to generating efficient supercomputing applications for researchers, the Center’s cyberinfrastructure and software development research capitalizes on all the components within the cycle of innovation — development, experimentation, and analysis - and continuously improves the services provided.
On August 28, 1995, Larry L. Buell was appointed Acting Director of OSC Networking of the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC). In this position, Buell is responsible for the day-to-day operations of OSC Networking. Buell succeeds Alison A. Brown and Jeffrey Ritter, who served as Director and Acting Director, respectively.
The Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) has chosen the SGI® Altix 3000 to replace its SGI® Origin 2000, and augment its HP Itanium 2 Cluster. The SGI Altix 3000 is a non-uniform memory access system with 32 Itanium processors and 64 gigabytes (GB) of memory. The Altix features Itanium 2 processors and runs the Linux operating system.
The Internet2 Fall 2005 Member Meeting is open to registration. The Member Meeting is sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic GigaPop in Philadelphia for Internet2 (MAGPI), and will take place at the Wyndham Philadelphia Hotel at Franklin Plaza.
Both OSC and Platform Lab have been nominated for Columbus Technology Council's 2003 Top Contributors to the Advancement of Technology (Top CAT) Awards.
This annual awards program recognizes and honors individuals, teams, corporations, and partnerships based on their technological and/or scientific significance, economic impact, and benefits to society in helping to build a strong technological community in Central Ohio.
The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at UCSD has been selected by Internet2 as a national Internet2 Technology Evaluation Center (ITEC). The mission of the center will be to test and evaluate leading-edge technologies for high-performance Internet2 networks—working with developers to test and refine network hardware and software for optimal end-to-end network performance up to 10 gigabits per second. Internet2 is a consortium led by more than 200 U.S. universities, working with industry and government to develop and deploy advanced Internet applications and technologies.
The Linworth Campus, Worthington Schools
The Linworth Campus of Worthington High School offers a Senior Walkabout Program that allows seniors who have met graduation requirements to use all or a portion of the second semester to test their skills and abilities in the adult world of work.
COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Three Ohio universities have received a $400,000 combined grant from the Ohio Board of Regents Action Fund and the National Science Foundation (NSF) for early connection to the state’s OSCnet. OSCnet is a high-speed fiber optic network designed by the networking division of the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC). OSCnet will link Ohio's universities, colleges, K-12 schools, and research centers to promote education, research and economic development opportunities.
