Troy Baer

HPC Operations Manager

Troy Baer is the HPC Operations Manager at the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC). In this role, he is responsible for leading OSC’s HPC Systems Operations team, which handles the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the center’s HPC clusters and infrastructure.

Before taking on the HPC Operations Manager role, Baer was a Senior HPC Systems Engineer in OSC’s HPC Systems Engineering team from 2015 to 2022. During that time, he was active in the Campus Research Computing Consortium (CaRCC) as a systems-facing track coordinator. His professional interests include HPC scheduling and resource management, workload characterization, benchmarking and application tuning, and parallel I/O.

Baer previously worked for OSC from 1998 to 2008 as a Supercomputing Support Engineer.  Before rejoining OSC, Baer worked for the University of Tennessee’s National Institute for Computational Science (NICS) as a Senior HPC System Administrator from 2008 to 2015. During his tenure at NICS, Baer also worked for the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment project as lead for software testing and deployment.

Baer earned bachelor's and master’s degrees in aeronautical and astronautical engineering from The Ohio State University in 1995 and 1998, respectively.
