Third Frontier Network Assists Homeland Security Through Real-Time, Interactive Training

Ohio’s Third Frontier Network (TFN), the nation’s most advanced research network, will assist the Great Lakes Educational Consortium for Homeland Security Training in regional first-response and anti-terrorism efforts. TFN initiatives that strengthen northwest Ohio’s defense efforts were highlighted today at Owens Community College.

Third Frontier Network Introduction and Historical Perspective

Ohio is positioned to become a national leader in networking and computing technologies with the deployment of the country’s first statewide fiber optic network for education and research. Called the Third Frontier Network, this new technology initiative of the Ohio Board of Regents is operated by OARnet, the Internet services division of the Ohio Supercomputer Center.

OSC-Springfield Now Links Directly to Third Frontier Network

The Ohio Supercomputer Center's Springfield branch now has the fastest connection to the Third Frontier Network (TFN) in the state of Ohio. OSC-Springfield (OSC-S) has a 10-gigabit (Gb) connection to the nation's leading high-speed superscale research fiber-optic network.

OSC-S will use the TFN for production and development support to the Internet for data management, large-scale data mining, climate modeling, nanotechnology and bioinformatics research and storage.

World's First Gigaconference Pushes Videoconference Equipment Limits

The world' first Gigaconference videoconferencing event opened at noon EST today to showcase the use of high-end, high-performance videoconferencing equipment. The Internet2 Commons and Codian Corp are sponsoring the event.
