If you have research projects requiring large amounts of memory and/or CPU power, this upcoming workshop at Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, is for you.
Held on May 17 and 18 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the “Parallel Programming with MPI” workshop will teach you how to leverage multiple processors to advance your science. This course, sponsored by Miami University and the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC), is geared toward those with C or Fortran programming language experience. It will be held in the University’s Gaskill Hall, room 201.
Some problems cannot be tackled by single-processor systems. This popular two-day workshop will focus on using the Message Passing Interface (MPI) standard library to write programs that take advantage of supercomputers containing dozens to thousands of processors and large amounts of memory. The portability of the MPI standard library will be demonstrated by writing programs that will run on several of OSC’s supercomputers.
Students can expect to hear about processor-to-processor communication techniques, “collective” operations performed by groups of processors, defining and using high-level processor connection topologies, and user-specific derived data types for message creation. This workshop will be a combination of lectures and hands-on lab sessions in which participants will write and execute sample MPI programs.
“My goal for this workshop is to give researchers a tool they can use to increase their productivity,” said Armen Ezekielian, workshop instructor and OSC systems developer/engineer. “This can be accomplished by generating more results per unit time for a given model size or by increasing the size and/or complexity of the model itself.”
