OSC-Springfield (OSC-S) has implemented a network route change, advancing from a T1 to a new DS3 line. Network bandwidth has dramatically increased from 1.54Mbps to 45Mbps, a connection that is 30 times faster than the previous network.

OARnet, OSC's networking division, completed this installation to make OSC-S supercomputers accessible to the U.S. Department of Energy, Department of Defense research laboratories, colleges, universities and area businesses.

The Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC)announced today that Pankaj Shah has been chosen as its new OARnet Director. Shah will officially assume the directorship on March 7, 2005.

Platform Lab, a partnership between the Business Technology Center (BTC) and the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC), received more than $1.1 million to expand its commercial capabilities along the OSCnet.

Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) Executive Director Stan Ahalt’s Blue Collar Computing speech on high performance computing (HPC) for industry and research applications received enthusiastic support at the SC2004 conference in Pittsburgh, Pa., last week.

The Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) announced the election of new officers for its Statewide Users Group (SUG).

At its October 2004 meeting, OSC’s SUG elected Dr. Austin Melton, of Kent State University (KSU), to the position of Chair and Robert Marcus, of Central State University, to the Vice-Chair position. Dr. Christopher Hadad, from The Ohio State University (OSU) Chemistry Department was appointed Chair of the SUG Allocations Committee.

The Quilt has announced that Hudnall Croasdale will serve as Executive Director beginning August 1. Croasdale succeeds Gwendolyn Huntoon, The Quilt’s executive director since October 2001, and Assistant Director for Networking at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center.

The Ohio Supercomputer Center’s Springfield Ohio facility (OSC-Springfield) has signed an agreement with Raytheon’s Intelligence and Information Systems business to investigate new technologies using OSC’s high performance computing and storage systems and Ohio’s new Third Frontier Network (TFN).

OSC-Springfield Director Kevin Wohlever said a number of high performance and data-intensive computing technologies will be investigated using Raytheon’s systems. The agreement is effective for the remainder of 2004, with contracts renewable in both 2005 and 2006.

Sinclair Community College’s online student success planning project has been named one of two recipients of the EDUCAUSE Award for Excellence in Information Technology Solutions.

EDUCAUSE is a nonprofit association whose mission is to advance higher education by promoting the intelligent use of information technology. Membership is open to institutions of higher education, corporations serving the higher education information technology market, and other related associations and organizations.

The Ohio Supercomputer Center’s Springfield, Ohio, facility will receive two new high-performance computing systems this summer, including the Cray X1 and the Cray XD1. Both systems will be installed in August, and will dramatically improve the efficiency and performance to meet the needs of the high-end user.
