Demand for TFN Service Forces Early Ring-0 Upgrade

Engineers from the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) completed an early upgrade to the primary core ring on the Third Frontier Network (TFN) last week in order to handle increasing demand for networking services. Known as Ring-0, it is the most important ring on the nation's most advanced statewide fiber optic network for education and research. TFN connects Ohio's universities, colleges, K-12 schools, research centers, federal labs, hospitals and a variety of public and private agencies to promote education, research and economic development.

Megaconference VIII Call For Interactive Presentations "Interactions" Now On

The world’s 8th annual Megaconference has been scheduled for November 8, 2006 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. (EST). Anyone in the world using H.323 Internet videoconferencing is invited to submit a proposal for what organizers are now calling “interactions,” or interactive presentations.

Megaconference founder Dr. Robert Dixon said videoconferencing is an inherently interactive medium, and to encourage this concept the term “interaction” has been adopted to describe this feature of the Megaconference.

Three Ohio Schools Receive $400K Grant for Early Connection to Third Frontier Network

Three Ohio universities have received a $400,000 combined grant from the Ohio Board of Regents Action Fund and the National Science Foundation (NSF) for early connection to the state’s OSCnet. OSCnet is a high-speed fiber optic network designed by the networking division of the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC). OSCnet will link Ohio's universities, colleges, K-12 schools, and research centers to promote education, research and economic development opportunities.

San Diego Chosen as Third ITEC Location

The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at UCSD has been selected by Internet2 as a national Internet2 Technology Evaluation Center (ITEC). The mission of the center will be to test and evaluate leading-edge technologies for high-performance Internet2 networks—working with developers to test and refine network hardware and software for optimal end-to-end network performance up to 10 gigabits per second. Internet2 is a consortium led by more than 200 U.S. universities, working with industry and government to develop and deploy advanced Internet applications and technologies.
