People and Governance


Computation has become increasingly important at each step of the innovation process. Equally important is expertise in computer and computational science. Because of our combined knowledge in cyberinfrastructure, OSC can contribute to meeting critical technical challenges and to increasing researcher productivity at every step of the innovation process.

OSC maintains staff expertise in computational physics, chemistry and biochemistry, fluid dynamics, structural analysis, and remote instrumentation. In addition, a number of our staff members are invited by organizations on a regular basis to share insights on national trends in industry competitiveness and computational science education, among others.

We have outlined the areas of expertise that our staff members comprise, as well as contact information and biographical sketches of their experience.


The Chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents, now the Ohio Department of Higher Education, established new OSC governance in 2011. The Chancellor directed the current OSC governance committee to continue as an advisory body, with the director of OARnet serving as an additional member. Funded by the Ohio General Assembly through the Ohio Board of Regents, now the Ohio Department of Higher Education, OSC reports to the Chancellor of the Ohio Department of Higher Education. All business and legal services are provided by The Ohio State University, with direction from the Vice President of Research. Through committees and direct contact with faculty and student researchers, OSC is well positioned to meet the needs of those who require our resources. And to plan for future acquisitions and services, OSC relies upon the guidance of the Ohio Department of Higher Education, the Ohio State Office of Research, and the advice of committees to achieve and sustain national eminence as an academic and industrial supercomputer center.

Each Ohio university has an appointed representative who advocates for both OSC and their fellow colleagues as part of the Statewide User Group (SUG) organization. SUG meets in April, August, and December with OSC staff to discuss hardware, software, allocations, and general information about the center.

Advisory Board

The Chancellor of the Ohio Board of Regents, now the Ohio Department of Higher Education, established new OARnet governance in 2011. Complete text and an addendum are available for download: Directive 2011-023 Consolidation of Consortia [pdf].

A joint OSC-OARnet Advisory Board recommends broad policy guidelines for OSC governance and periodically reviews its program and operations, with special attention to ensuring that the management and operation of the supercomputing systems that supports the State of Ohio's goals for higher education, P-12 education, economic development, and the goals of its state agencies. Fiscal Agent

The Ohio Supercomputer Center operates as a unit within and is operated for the State of Ohio by the Office of Research at The Ohio State University (OSU). OSU serves as the fiscal agent for the Center and consults with the Ohio Department of Higher Education in appointing an executive director, developing the Center’s budget and designing OSC programs.

Research and Production Advisory Committees

These committees were established in 2004 to expand the representation of industrial and research constituents. They both offer insight on emerging roles that are complementary to OSC’s core activities.

Production Advisory Committee

Charged with providing input on issues relating to investments in the major shared infrastructure for both OSC networking and high performance computing, this committee meets quarterly. OSTEER and SUG representatives carry their recommendations to the Advisory Board.

Each member serves a two-year term. The committee is composed of:

  • 2 IUC university chief information officers
  • 2 research vice presidents/research officers
  • 2 infrastructure managers for university research centers or programs, such as BRTT or WCI centers
  • 1 OSTEER executive committee member
  • 1 SUG executive committee member
  • The State of Ohio CIO


Research Advisory Committee

This group provides counsel on new areas for research infrastructure investment priorities and support services to enhance the research and development climate in Ohio. The executive director of OSC takes the committee’s recommendations to the Advisory Board. The committee holds an annual conference plus meets three times a year.

Each member serves a two-year term. The committee is composed of:

  • 3 research vice presidents from Ohio higher education Institutions
  • 3 research directors from Ohio universities managing major state or federal research programs
  • Science advisor to the Governor of Ohio
  • 3 industry R&D leaders, including at least one person from a federal research lab
  • 1 OSTEER representative
  • 1 SUG representative
