Since 1987, OSC has been providing our clients services in four areas, or functions:
Supercomputing. OSC provides the computational power and storage that scientists need to meet their research goals. Whether researchers need to harness the incredible power of a parallel processor cluster to better understand deep space, a vector processor machine to do weather modeling, or a mid-size shared memory processor system to model the human heart, OSC has the hardware and software solutions to meet their needs.
Research. A staff of high performance computing and networking research experts maintain active research programs in HPC and Networking, Homeland Security and Defense, Environmental Sciences, Engineering and Life Sciences. Our goals are to lead science and engineering research efforts, assist researchers with custom needs and collaborate with regional, national and international researchers in groundbreaking initiatives.
Education. OSC has a national reputation for its training and education programs. Staff teach faculty and student researchers through scientific computing workshops, one-on-one classes, and web-based portal training. Ohio students gain exposure to the world of high performance computing and networking during our annual summer institutes for young women in middle school and for junior and senior high school students. And, the statewide, virtual Ralph Regula School of Computational Science coordinates computational science and engineering education activities for all levels of learning.
Cyberinfrastructure. The Ohio Supercomputer Center’s cyberinfrastructure and software development researchers provide the user community with various high performance computing software options. This variety enables researchers to select parallel computing languages they most prefer, and just as important, it creates a test bed for exploring these systems. By taking a holistic approach to generating efficient supercomputing applications for researchers, the Center’s cyberinfrastructure and software development research capitalizes on all the components within the cycle of innovation — development, experimentation, and analysis - and continuously improves the services provided.
A new online publication unveiled this week, the Journal Of Computational Science Education (JOCSE), will publish peer-reviewed articles focusing on various aspects of teaching computational science – the application of computing, especially supercomputing, to the solution of complex scientific and engineering problems.
The Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) is looking for high school freshmen and sophomores interested in investigating how advances in high performance computing and networking may change the way we work, play, shop and learn in the next century.

The world’s 8th annual Megaconference has been scheduled for November 8, 2006 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. (EST). Anyone in the world using H.323 Internet videoconferencing is invited to submit a proposal for what organizers are now calling “interactions,” or interactive presentations.
Megaconference founder Dr. Robert Dixon said videoconferencing is an inherently interactive medium, and to encourage this concept the term “interaction” has been adopted to describe this feature of the Megaconference.
Internet2 today announced the first winners of its Internet2 Driving Exemplary Applications (IDEA) Awards program which seeks to recognize leading innovators who have created and deployed advanced network applications which have applied advanced networking to enable transformational progress in research, teaching and learning , and which hold the promise to increase the impact of next-generation networks around the world.
Researchers have created a new material that overcomes two of the major obstacles to solar power: it absorbs all the energy contained in sunlight, and generates electrons in a way that makes them easier to capture.
Ohio State University chemists and their colleagues combined electrically conductive plastic with metals including molybdenum and titanium to create the hybrid material. This new material is the first that can absorb all the energy contained in visible light at once.
Graduate students from around the state traveled to the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) on August 12-13 for its fourth Graduate Student Workshop and Conference. The conference allowed graduate students to learn more about supercomputing tools used to enhance research and share their own research.
“OSC’s Graduate Conference provides students with the chance to share their research and learn about our resources. More importantly, they can network with other students and present their research to a friendly audience,” said Elaine Landwehr, Conference Coordinator.
Ohio is in good hands if State Science Day resembles any indication of the future.
Brent M. McPherson and his partner Ryan Stocker, both seniors at Minerva High School, received the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) Award for their exceptional team project entered at State Science Day 1999. McPherson and Stoker were two of three students chosen for this prestigious award.
