International conference features Ohio Supercomputer Center experts

Nov 9, 2012

Columbus, Ohio (Nov. 9, 2012) –The Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) is kicking off its 25th anniversary at SC12, the premier international conference on high performance computing, networking and storage being held Nov. 10-16 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

OSC traditionally showcases its state industry and research partnerships by participating in the exhibition and technical programs at SC12. This year, HP, Intel and the Ohio Technology Consortium (OH-TECH) are sponsoring a reception the evening of Nov. 13 to celebrate OSC’s 25 years of high performance computing.

Established by the Ohio Board of Regents in 1987, OSC is internationally known for providing supercomputer resources and training and staff support to an array of diverse academic, government and private industry research projects.

That expertise will be shared throughout the week, as OSC experts will be presenting on topics related to the center’s collaborations in higher education and signature research programs. They include:

  • Kevin Wohlever, director of supercomputing, is presenting "OSC History, HP Experiences and Future Plans” to the HP User Group Forum on Nov. 9.
  • Steve Gordon, senior director of education and client support, and director of the Ralph Regula School of Computational Science, will present an HPC Educator session on "Introducing Computational Science in the Curriculum" on Nov. 11. Gordon also joins a panel of his peers on Nov. 13 to discuss “Developing the Technical-Computing-Workforce for Manufacturing.”
  • The OSC research team, led by David Hudak, program director for cyberinfrastructure, are participating in the Research Poster Reception, with a poster on “Application Restructuring for Vectorization and Parallelization: A Case Study" on Nov. 13.
  • OSC experts also are presenting on "Code Generation for Parallel Execution of a Class of Irregular Loops on Distributed Memory Systems" on Nov. 14.
  • A multidisciplinary team has been nominated as finalists for Best Paper and Best Student Paper for the "Design of a Scalable InfiniBand Topology Service to Enable Network-Topology-Aware Placement of Processes.” On Nov. 14, the work will be presented by Hari Subramoni, Sreeram Potluri, Krishna Kandalla, Bill Barth, Jerome Vienne, Jeff Keasler, Karen Tomko, Karl Schulz, Adam Moody, Dhabaleswar Panda.

More details on these featured programs and research are available online at sc12.supercomputing.org and at the OSC booth (Booth #2501). OSC’s booth partners this year include: the Ohio Academic Resources Network (OARnet), Nimbis Services and TotalSim.
