Since 1987, OSC has been providing our clients services in four areas, or functions:

Supercomputing. OSC provides the computational power and storage that scientists need to meet their research goals.  Whether researchers need to harness the incredible power of a parallel processor cluster to better understand deep space, a vector processor machine to do weather modeling, or a mid-size shared memory processor system to model the human heart, OSC has the hardware and software solutions to meet their needs.

Research. A staff of high performance computing and networking research experts maintain active research programs in HPC and Networking, Homeland Security and Defense, Environmental Sciences, Engineering and Life Sciences. Our goals are to lead science and engineering research efforts, assist researchers with custom needs and collaborate with regional, national and international researchers in groundbreaking initiatives.

Education. OSC has a national reputation for its training and education programs. Staff teach faculty and student researchers through scientific computing workshops, one-on-one classes, and web-based portal training. Ohio students gain exposure to the world of high performance computing and networking during our annual summer institutes for young women in middle school and for junior and senior high school students. And, the statewide, virtual Ralph Regula School of Computational Science coordinates computational science and engineering education activities for all levels of learning.

Cyberinfrastructure. The Ohio Supercomputer Center’s cyberinfrastructure and software development researchers provide the user community with various high performance computing software options. This variety enables researchers to select parallel computing languages they most prefer, and just as important, it creates a test bed for exploring these systems. By taking a holistic approach to generating efficient supercomputing applications for researchers, the Center’s cyberinfrastructure and software development research capitalizes on all the components within the cycle of innovation — development, experimentation, and analysis - and continuously improves the services provided.

Partnership lends computational support to acclaimed research into polar climate change

 

As one of the esteemed scientists working with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), David Bromwich’s research — conducted, in part, at the Ohio Supercomputer Center — on the changes in polar atmospheric circulation and Antarctic climate variability contributed to winning this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.

Columbus, OH - February 4, 2004 - The Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) has awarded five AMD Athlon clusters to Ohio research teams as part of its Cluster Ohio program. The high performance computing (HPC) clusters provided by OSC enable advanced research capabilities and promote Ohio's national competitiveness in science and technology discovery.

OSC Awards Second Cluster Ohio Grants to State Faculty

OSC's High Performance Computing (HPC) Division announces that Itanium computing clusters have been awarded to five Ohio higher education institutions. Nineteen researchers submitted proposals in the competition for academic cluster computers.

Faculty researchers were encouraged to submit proposals that highlighted cluster-style parallel computing, shared scientific visualization tools, and distributed network computation applications.

$1 million grant to OSC and partners to provide business with workforce training and supercomputing portals

The National Science Foundation last week designated nearly $1 million to provide Ohio’s workforce with crucial training in computational modeling and simulation. The grant also supplies Ohio’s businesses with advanced Internet portals that will offer cyberinfrastructure resources companies need to compete in the global marketplace.

OSC, University of Toledo, and EISC to Sponsor Forum on Applications of High Performance Computing to Manfacturing Processing Flows and Product Design.

OSC, in cooperation with the University of Toledo and the Edison Industrial Systems Center will host a meeting in Toledo on September 30, from 9:30 to 2:30 on the applications of computing technology to product design and manufacturing process flows. A followup meeting will be held on October 21 at the same location to discuss possible research agendas that will be produced using information from the first meeting.

Somnath Ghosh envisions a day when the lifespan of aircraft engines could be predicted with better certainty.

The variables involved, however, seem endless: How much load would the aircraft carry? What are the failure characteristics of each composite used in each part? How much impact could they withstand? What effect does natural degradation have over time?

Graduate Student Workshop and Conference

The High Performance Computing (HPC) division of OSC is sponsoring a Graduate Student Conference/Workshop at OSC on August 10 and 11, 2001.

The purpose of the Conference/Workshop is to introduce graduate students from around the state to the resources and capabilities of OSC, as well as to exchange information about research projects being undertaken by other graduate students in Ohio.
