Since 1987, OSC has been providing our clients services in four areas, or functions:

Supercomputing. OSC provides the computational power and storage that scientists need to meet their research goals.  Whether researchers need to harness the incredible power of a parallel processor cluster to better understand deep space, a vector processor machine to do weather modeling, or a mid-size shared memory processor system to model the human heart, OSC has the hardware and software solutions to meet their needs.

Research. A staff of high performance computing and networking research experts maintain active research programs in HPC and Networking, Homeland Security and Defense, Environmental Sciences, Engineering and Life Sciences. Our goals are to lead science and engineering research efforts, assist researchers with custom needs and collaborate with regional, national and international researchers in groundbreaking initiatives.

Education. OSC has a national reputation for its training and education programs. Staff teach faculty and student researchers through scientific computing workshops, one-on-one classes, and web-based portal training. Ohio students gain exposure to the world of high performance computing and networking during our annual summer institutes for young women in middle school and for junior and senior high school students. And, the statewide, virtual Ralph Regula School of Computational Science coordinates computational science and engineering education activities for all levels of learning.

Cyberinfrastructure. The Ohio Supercomputer Center’s cyberinfrastructure and software development researchers provide the user community with various high performance computing software options. This variety enables researchers to select parallel computing languages they most prefer, and just as important, it creates a test bed for exploring these systems. By taking a holistic approach to generating efficient supercomputing applications for researchers, the Center’s cyberinfrastructure and software development research capitalizes on all the components within the cycle of innovation — development, experimentation, and analysis - and continuously improves the services provided.

Cyberinfrastructure development improves remote use of scientific instruments; expands research, education opportunities

Ohio’s academic and industrial researchers now can share some of the state’s most valuable and expensive scientific instruments via the Internet, thanks to cyberinfrastructure tools developed by engineers and researchers at the Ohio Supercomputer Center.

HP Supercomputer to be Deployed at Ohio Supercomputer Center for Advanced Research

HP (NYSE:HPQ) today announced that the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) will deploy an HP supercomputer based on a cluster of more than 150 Intel® Itanium® 2-based HP Workstation zx6000 systems.

OSC selected HP's computing cluster because of its blend of high performance, flexibility and low cost. The HP cluster will use Myricom's Myrinet high-speed interconnect and run the Red Hat Linux Advanced Workstation, a 64-bit Linux operating system.

OSC-Springfield Now Links Directly to Third Frontier Network

The Ohio Supercomputer Center's Springfield branch now has the fastest connection to the Third Frontier Network (TFN) in the state of Ohio. OSC-Springfield (OSC-S) has a 10-gigabit (Gb) connection to the nation's leading high-speed superscale research fiber-optic network.

OSC-S will use the TFN for production and development support to the Internet for data management, large-scale data mining, climate modeling, nanotechnology and bioinformatics research and storage.

OSC Awards Cluster Ohio Processors to Select Ohio Faculty

 

OSC's HPC Division has announced that computing systems have been awarded to nine Ohio higher education institutions. Thirty-four researchers submitted proposals in the competition for academic cluster computers. In addition to the processing units, OSC (Ohio Supercomputer Center) will provide onsite maintenance, software, training, and system administration advice.

The Cluster Ohio Project, an initiative of OSC, the Ohio Board of Regents, and the OSC Statewide Users Group, is an effort to encourage faculty to build local computing clusters.

New Blue Collar Bill Seeks Federal Funds So Small Businesses Can Compute

Now even the most down home mom and pop businesses may have access to supercomputers without worrying about the cost.

A bill proposed by Senators Mike DeWine, R-Ohio, and Herb Kohl, D-Wis., seeks legislation to spend $25 million a year for five years to fund up to five supercomputer centers across the country. The idea is modeled after the Ohio Supercomputer Center’s (OSC) Blue Collar Computing initiative that extends cutting-edge technology use to smaller businesses and manufacturers at a no- or low-cost rate.
