Since 1987, OSC has been providing our clients services in four areas, or functions:
Supercomputing. OSC provides the computational power and storage that scientists need to meet their research goals. Whether researchers need to harness the incredible power of a parallel processor cluster to better understand deep space, a vector processor machine to do weather modeling, or a mid-size shared memory processor system to model the human heart, OSC has the hardware and software solutions to meet their needs.
Research. A staff of high performance computing and networking research experts maintain active research programs in HPC and Networking, Homeland Security and Defense, Environmental Sciences, Engineering and Life Sciences. Our goals are to lead science and engineering research efforts, assist researchers with custom needs and collaborate with regional, national and international researchers in groundbreaking initiatives.
Education. OSC has a national reputation for its training and education programs. Staff teach faculty and student researchers through scientific computing workshops, one-on-one classes, and web-based portal training. Ohio students gain exposure to the world of high performance computing and networking during our annual summer institutes for young women in middle school and for junior and senior high school students. And, the statewide, virtual Ralph Regula School of Computational Science coordinates computational science and engineering education activities for all levels of learning.
Cyberinfrastructure. The Ohio Supercomputer Center’s cyberinfrastructure and software development researchers provide the user community with various high performance computing software options. This variety enables researchers to select parallel computing languages they most prefer, and just as important, it creates a test bed for exploring these systems. By taking a holistic approach to generating efficient supercomputing applications for researchers, the Center’s cyberinfrastructure and software development research capitalizes on all the components within the cycle of innovation — development, experimentation, and analysis - and continuously improves the services provided.
Researchers in Columbus, Ohio, and Los Angeles are collaborating on a groundbreaking effort that, when fully implemented, will allow health care experts around the world to have comprehensive information about a patient’s tumor at their fingertips.
The proliferation of widely accessible graphical processing units is changing the landscape of supercomputing, offering researchers multiple benefits — and a few challenges, according to Wen-mei Hwu, Ph.D., who recently presented “The Future of Scalable Computing with GPU Computing” as an invited guest for the Ohio Supercomputer Center’s Computational Science Lecture Series.
The Ohio Supercomputer Center's (OSC) summer education programs -- the Young Women's Summer Institute (YWSI) and Summer Institute (SI) -- are now accepting applications for summer 2006.
YWSI is a weeklong program for Ohio's middle-school girls. It is designed to promote computer, math, and science skills as well as provide hands-on learning.

Platform Lab received and installed an important contribution from Sun Microsystems, Inc. as the lab opened its doors for operation. The contribution includes four enterprise-level Sun 220R dual processor systems, each with two gigabytes of memory, a pair of Sun Netra web application servers, and significant disk storage capacity. |
More than 80 national and international research institutions and networking organizations are participating in Megaconference, the world's largest H.323 Internet video conference, being held today in Seattle. Megaconference runs in conjunction with the Fall Internet2 Meeting, taking place today through Wednesday. The Megaconference is a permanent, continuous multipoint H.323 Internet video conference organized and supported by the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) located in Columbus.
The Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) will participate in the first-ever National Internet2 Day on Thursday, March 18. This nationwide virtual event will consist of nearly 40 leading research universities from across the country, including four major Ohio institutions: The Ohio State University, University of Toledo, Case Western Reserve University, and University of Cincinnati. Events will run from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and the proceedings will be netcast to accommodate different bandwidth capabilities.

The Ohio Third Frontier Commission has awarded Youngstown State University with a $2.1 million grant to establish a Center for Excellence in Advanced Materials Analyses in collaboration with Fireline TCON Inc. and the Ohio Supercomputer Center. The project will focus on research, analyses, modeling and commercialization of products with increased resistance to thermal shock and lower thermal conductivity.
