Ascend
HOWTO: Use uv for Python at OSC
uv is a fast Python package and virtual environment manager developed by Astral. It provides functionality provided by both venv and pip, but is significantly faster at dependency resolution. Some users who do not need Conda packages or cross-language support in their project may prefer to use uv for its speed. Because uv is still under active development and its behavior may change between frequent releases, OSC does not currently provide it as a centrally managed software package.
Hosted Services
OSC provides hosted instances of specialized applications that require dedicated server infrastructure and authentication methods. These services run continuously on OSC systems, allowing research groups to access applications through a web browser.

Topaz
Topaz is a software package for particle detection and image denoising in cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) that uses convolutional neural networks.
Rolling Reboot for Security Fix
A rolling reboot is in progress to address CVE-2026-23111 for all clusters, including Ascend, Cardinal, and Pitzer. Login nodes will be rebooted first and access will be temporarily disrupted. Temporary Login Node Instability on Ascend
We are currently experiencing temporary instability on the Ascend login nodes, which may result in slow response times or unexpected session disconnects. Our team is actively investigating the issue and will share updates as more information becomes available.
ptrace Disabled Across OSC Systems

System Downtime May 12 2026
A downtime for OSC HPC systems is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday, May 12, 2026. The downtime will affect the Pitzer, Cardinal and Ascend Clusters, web portals, the state-wide licenses and HPC file servers. MyOSC (the client portal) will be available during the downtime. In preparation for the downtime, the batch scheduler will not start jobs that cannot be completed before 7 a.m., May 12. Jobs that are not started on clusters will be held until after the downtime and then started once the system is returned to production status.
