After upgrading the operating system to RHEL 9.6 during the scheduled downtime on May 12, 2026, applications utilizing UCX (rc_gda) or GPU-initiated networking may experience failures.
After the scheduled downtime on May 12, 2026, STAR-CCM+ has been encountering out-of-memory errors when running OpenMPI jobs. A message similar to the following appears repeatedly in the output:
[c0317.ten.osc.edu:1736021] Read -1, expected 133860, errno = 1
We have not yet identified the root cause of the issue; however, we have discovered that this error does not occur in multi-node jobs.
StarCCM software will be temporarily unavailable starting February 21, 2026.
Why: Our current license expires on Feb 21 at 11:59pm EST.
Status: We have finished all the renewal paperwork and are just waiting for the vendor to send us the new license file.
What's next: We expect to get the file soon. We will post an update the moment the software is back online.

After the most recent downtime we discovered that various OOD apps relying on the "virtualgl" module on Cardinal were broken. We have since updated and pinned the latest virtualgl version for each broken app
We have observed that several applications built with MVAPICH2, including Quantum ESPRESSO 7.4.1, HDF5, and OpenFOAM, may experience poor performance on Cardinal. We suspect this issue could be related to the newer network devices or drivers. Since MVAPICH2 is no longer supported, we recommend switching to MVAPICH 3.0 or another MPI implementation to ensure continued performance and stability in your work.
On all clusters the cp2k executables from module cp2k/2023.2 can produce huge output files due to many many repeating errors from MKL, e.g.:
MKL module files define some helper environment variables with incorrect paths. This can yield link time errors. All three clusters are affected. We are working to correct the module files. A workaround for users is to redefine the environment variable with the correct path; this requires some computational maturity. We recommend users contact oschelp@osc.edu for assistance. An example error from Cardinal with module intel-oneapi-mkl/2023.2.0 that defined environment variable MKL_LIBS_INT64 follows:
