Since 1987, OSC has been providing our clients services in four areas, or functions:
Supercomputing. OSC provides the computational power and storage that scientists need to meet their research goals. Whether researchers need to harness the incredible power of a parallel processor cluster to better understand deep space, a vector processor machine to do weather modeling, or a mid-size shared memory processor system to model the human heart, OSC has the hardware and software solutions to meet their needs.
Research. A staff of high performance computing and networking research experts maintain active research programs in HPC and Networking, Homeland Security and Defense, Environmental Sciences, Engineering and Life Sciences. Our goals are to lead science and engineering research efforts, assist researchers with custom needs and collaborate with regional, national and international researchers in groundbreaking initiatives.
Education. OSC has a national reputation for its training and education programs. Staff teach faculty and student researchers through scientific computing workshops, one-on-one classes, and web-based portal training. Ohio students gain exposure to the world of high performance computing and networking during our annual summer institutes for young women in middle school and for junior and senior high school students. And, the statewide, virtual Ralph Regula School of Computational Science coordinates computational science and engineering education activities for all levels of learning.
Cyberinfrastructure. The Ohio Supercomputer Center’s cyberinfrastructure and software development researchers provide the user community with various high performance computing software options. This variety enables researchers to select parallel computing languages they most prefer, and just as important, it creates a test bed for exploring these systems. By taking a holistic approach to generating efficient supercomputing applications for researchers, the Center’s cyberinfrastructure and software development research capitalizes on all the components within the cycle of innovation — development, experimentation, and analysis - and continuously improves the services provided.
Columbus, Ohio (July 5, 2012) - At this year's Young Women's Summer Intitute, 15 middle school girls from around Ohio will be exploring complex environmental watershed issues that impact the state.
Sixteen high school students from around Ohio will be attending the Ohio Supercomputer Center’s Summer Institute on June 17-29, 2012, at The Ohio State University. These students, selected from 69 applicants, will research and solve real-world challenges through exploring topics from investigating cyber-crime to designing autonomous robots.

Learn about Python, one of today’s most popular mid-level programming languages for scientists and engineers.
The Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) is hosting a workshop, Python Programming for High Performance Computing, on February 20 - 21 from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in its BALE theater. The workshop is geared toward those wanting to learn about Python but have never used it before. Attendees should have some programming experience.
OSC is excited to host the 45th Cray User Group Conference (CUG 2003) on May 12-16, at the Hyatt on Capital Square. CUG 2003 will allow Cray users from all over the world to exchange problem-solving information and enjoy professional interactions with fellow Cray users.
This year's conference is unique because it will showcase the highly anticipated Cray X1 System. "Flight to Insight," the CUG 2003 theme, was chosen to honor Ohio's rich heritage and multiple contributions to the aerospace industry and world of technological insight and innovation.
Using precise computer simulations, Ohio State University researchers were able to discover potential keys to mass producing a specific pattern of graphite in a layer just one atom thick, signaling a breakthrough that could lead to "graphene" challenging silicon as the preferred material for manufacturing faster, more efficient computer chips.
In preparation for the arrival of a new high performance computing system, the Ohio Supercomputer Center is providing three parallel computing workshops this spring.
The Portland Group, Inc. (PGI) and OSC (Ohio Supercomputer Center) today announced that OSC has acquired 200 copies of PGI Workstation, PGI's suite of parallel Fortran, C and C++ compilers and tools for Linux workstations. The announcement was made from SC99, the world's largest conference for high performance computing sponsored by ACM SIGARCH and the IEEE Computer Society.
As college students return to classes for the fall term, many are looking for any financial assistance that might be available. For those studying a combination of biology, computer science and information technology – a field known as bioinformatics – there are significant scholarships still available.
Both businesses and researchers increasingly are using computational science to enhance their return on investments and discovery methods.
