Ohio Supercomputer Center to host free webinar on innovative web-based portal

Jan 18, 2018

Columbus, Ohio – The Ohio Supercomputer Center will host a free webinar to discuss topics related to its Open OnDemand software project at 2 p.m. on Jan. 29. The Customizing and Extending Open OnDemand Webinar will feature live demonstrations on OnDemand installations from different sites, including the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center and Tufts University. OSC experts will provide examples of how to configure OnDemand and extend the installation with custom branding and applications.

Open OnDemand is OSC’s innovative, web-based portal for accessing high performance computing services made available to HPC centers worldwide last September. The open-source software project is based on OSC’s proven OnDemand web platform, and enables HPC centers to install and deploy advanced web and graphical applications and interfaces for their clients.

Through OnDemand, HPC clients can upload and download files, create, edit, submit and monitor jobs, run GUI applications and connect via SSH, all via a web browser, with no client software to install and configure. To date, more than 10 sites have installed and deployed the package, and many others are  evaluating it.

The latest version of Open OnDemand includes the ability to develop new applications, templates for a variety of popular apps, such as Jupyter, and extensive documentation, including a variety of authentication modules.

“We feel that Open OnDemand now enables our peer HPC centers to provide to their clients with simple, easy access to powerful computing services,” said Basil Gohar, manager of OSC’s Web and Interface Applications Group. “All they need is a web browser, their username and password.”

Going forward, OSC is interested in adding better support for interactive apps like Paraveiw, MATLAB and RStudio, as well as an RPM based installation procedure and built in usage reporting.

The webinar will be hosted via WebEx available at this URL:  https://oh-tech.webex.com/oh-tech/j.php?MTID=m59502dfb44def46ebbdff37220908d1f.
