Since 1987, OSC has been providing our clients services in four areas, or functions:
Supercomputing. OSC provides the computational power and storage that scientists need to meet their research goals. Whether researchers need to harness the incredible power of a parallel processor cluster to better understand deep space, a vector processor machine to do weather modeling, or a mid-size shared memory processor system to model the human heart, OSC has the hardware and software solutions to meet their needs.
Research. A staff of high performance computing and networking research experts maintain active research programs in HPC and Networking, Homeland Security and Defense, Environmental Sciences, Engineering and Life Sciences. Our goals are to lead science and engineering research efforts, assist researchers with custom needs and collaborate with regional, national and international researchers in groundbreaking initiatives.
Education. OSC has a national reputation for its training and education programs. Staff teach faculty and student researchers through scientific computing workshops, one-on-one classes, and web-based portal training. Ohio students gain exposure to the world of high performance computing and networking during our annual summer institutes for young women in middle school and for junior and senior high school students. And, the statewide, virtual Ralph Regula School of Computational Science coordinates computational science and engineering education activities for all levels of learning.
Cyberinfrastructure. The Ohio Supercomputer Center’s cyberinfrastructure and software development researchers provide the user community with various high performance computing software options. This variety enables researchers to select parallel computing languages they most prefer, and just as important, it creates a test bed for exploring these systems. By taking a holistic approach to generating efficient supercomputing applications for researchers, the Center’s cyberinfrastructure and software development research capitalizes on all the components within the cycle of innovation — development, experimentation, and analysis - and continuously improves the services provided.
Video games – a perennial favorite for holiday gifts – could provide just the encouragement teenagers need to embrace the oft-dreaded high school science, math and technology courses.
The Boards of Directors of Internet2 and the National Lambda Rail (NLR) recently passed resolutions to discuss a possible consolidation of the two national high-speed fiber optic networks for education and research.
U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today visited the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) to announce that $355,000 has been awarded to OSC and PolymerOhio, Inc. by the U.S. Department of Commerce. Brown was joined by Wayne Earley, president and CEO of PolymerOhio, Steve Gordon, Co-Executive Director of the Ohio Supercomputer Center, Carol Whitacre, Vice President of Research at The Ohio State University, and Ann O’Beay, Chief Technology Officer at the Ohio Board of Regents.
An Ohio State University molecular biologist leveraged a supercomputer to help better define the family tree of a group of enzymes that have been implicated in a wide range of human diseases and are important targets for anti-cancer therapies.
Along with several OSU colleagues, Rebecca S. Lamb, Ph.D., an assistant professor of Molecular Genetics, recently analyzed the evolutionary history of the poly(ADP-ribose)polymerase (PARP) superfamily.

Abstract
Ohio University faculty and students will soon learn different ways to show off their research and how to move from using overheads and handouts, to using web sites and audio visuals with the help of the Ohio Supercomputer Center.
An audio version of the Greater Columbus Free-Net User's Guide is now distributed through the Central Ohio Radio Reading Service, Inc. (CORRS). The User's Guide audio version is a set of six audio cassette tapes and is a collaborative effort of The Ohio State University, the Greater Columbus Free-Net, and CORRS.

For the past 12 years, OSC (Ohio Supercomputer Center) has made a place for itself in the world of high performance networking and computing. This year will be no exception when OSC showcases recent projects at Supercomputing 2000 (SC2000), an annual week-long national supercomputing conference. SC2000 will be held at the Dallas Convention Center in Texas on November 4-10. |
With the deployment of the Ohio Supercomputer Center’s new IBM Cluster 1350, the State of Ohio is now home to the 65th fastest supercomputer in the world and the 9th fastest among U.S. academic supercomputer centers.
The recently established Telehealth Video Resource Center (TVRC) today officially launched a website to make the center’s videoconferencing services easily available to physicians and healthcare education professionals worldwide.
The TVRC web site, www.telehealthvrc.org, provides visitors with videoconference hardware and software requirements, scheduling tools, telehealth news and instruction, an e-health forum, membership information and staff and advisory board biographical sketches.
