SI 2000 gave 15 of Ohio's brightest high school freshmen and sophomores real-world experience in the dynamic fields of high performance computing (HPC) and networking. SI students saw how scientists solve problems using computing and networking -- and participated in the process.
During this two-week residential program at OSC, students got hands-on training in programming and visualization, as well as attended lectures by OSC's faculty of experts in HPC, networking and related fields. They heard the latest on hot topics like parallel programming in engineering and physics and advanced networking. Students worked together in small groups with scientists, learned how to apply scientific methods to their studies, and solved complex problems with their peers using OSC resources. The program concluded with formal student presentations about project results, just as scientists do when they complete a study. The SI experience allowed students to exercise problem-solving, use interpersonal communication skills, and be creative -- all while learning about HPC and networking.
And SI 2000 wasn't just about spending time in the classroom. SI participants learned about team building while navigating obstacle courses at the Adventure Education Center. Students got a behind-the-scenes view of the OSU campus. They also visited science-, engineering- and math-related attractions throughout Columbus.
The SI team projects challenged the students and encouraged cooperation and rapport building with peers. Students had the opportunity to venture into the world of high performance computing and networking and face the real world challenges that many of our high performance computing users encounter. Each project required the "scientists" or "engineers" (students) to understand the problem, write a computer program to solve the problem and visualize the results. Each SI participant took part in a team project with two or three peers. The students selected their teams, elected a project leader and chose a project from the list below.
