Since 1987, OSC has been providing our clients services in four areas, or functions:
Supercomputing. OSC provides the computational power and storage that scientists need to meet their research goals. Whether researchers need to harness the incredible power of a parallel processor cluster to better understand deep space, a vector processor machine to do weather modeling, or a mid-size shared memory processor system to model the human heart, OSC has the hardware and software solutions to meet their needs.
Research. A staff of high performance computing and networking research experts maintain active research programs in HPC and Networking, Homeland Security and Defense, Environmental Sciences, Engineering and Life Sciences. Our goals are to lead science and engineering research efforts, assist researchers with custom needs and collaborate with regional, national and international researchers in groundbreaking initiatives.
Education. OSC has a national reputation for its training and education programs. Staff teach faculty and student researchers through scientific computing workshops, one-on-one classes, and web-based portal training. Ohio students gain exposure to the world of high performance computing and networking during our annual summer institutes for young women in middle school and for junior and senior high school students. And, the statewide, virtual Ralph Regula School of Computational Science coordinates computational science and engineering education activities for all levels of learning.
Cyberinfrastructure. The Ohio Supercomputer Center’s cyberinfrastructure and software development researchers provide the user community with various high performance computing software options. This variety enables researchers to select parallel computing languages they most prefer, and just as important, it creates a test bed for exploring these systems. By taking a holistic approach to generating efficient supercomputing applications for researchers, the Center’s cyberinfrastructure and software development research capitalizes on all the components within the cycle of innovation — development, experimentation, and analysis - and continuously improves the services provided.
The Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) is opening a new facility in Springfield that will add 30 high-tech jobs over the next two years. The center will help anchor a new research park and act as a catalyst for building a technology corridor between the Springfield-Dayton area and Central Ohio.
The Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) held the Fifth Annual Windows on the Future Conference Wednesday March 8 at the Hilton Columbus at Easton Town Center. The conference was co-sponsored by OSC's networking division (OARnet) and high performance computing (HPC) divisions.
The Windows on the Future Conference united internationally-recognized experts to discuss new and emerging computing, networking, and related technologies, as well as the impact these technologies will have on future research, applications, and Ohio's economy.
OSC would like to announce that the name of the Third Frontier Network is being changed to OSCnet. This name is the result of a series of meetings with legislators, academic partners, and state leadership. Virtually all of those participating in the discussions noted that it was time to clearly associate the network with OSC so as to minimize confusion for OSCnet users and those who provide funding for the network, including the higher education partners that were central to the inception and implementation of the network.
Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) Research Scientist Don Stredney was selected to present "Biomedical Applications of High Performance Computing" at the Medicine Meets Virtual Reality II conference in San Diego, California, January 27-30, 1994, sponsored by the University of California San Diego School of Medicine.
On Friday, January 28, Stredney will detail the current activity of OSC and The Ohio State University in developing a system to provide an intuitive interface for manipulating and experiencing virtual data sets, specifically volume reconstructions of medical data.
Ruckus service offers students online library of more than 3 million songs, videosThe nation’s most advanced statewide network for education and research – OSCnet – now provides many Ohio college and university students access to an online service that allows downloading of millions of songs and videos legally and for free.
A Sun Solaris training class, held at OSC on December 11, was a great opportunity for users to learn how to use the system environments more effectively for their research. Participants included Wilberforce University, OSU Medical Center, NCR, Lucent Technologies, Nationwide, Huntington Bank, and Chemical Abstracts.
OSC, along with several other organizations, is co-sponsoring a four-day conference in Russia on microelectronics. A symposium will be held on September 10-13 in Moscow on "Nano and Giga Challenges in Microelectronics Research and Opportunities in Russia."
David Hudak, professor of computer science at Ohio Northern University, recently was named a member of the Ohio Supercomputer Center's (OSC) Statewide Users Group.
The OSC Statewide Users Group, or SUG, connects OSC to the academic institutions in the state and provides a faculty and student viewpoint on OSC's operations.

The Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) has selected 18 of Ohio's middle-school girls to participate in its Young Women's Summer Institute (YWSI) held on July 30-August 5, 2006 in Columbus.
YWSI is a weeklong program sponsored by OSC for middle-school girls in Ohio. It is designed to promote computer, math and science skills as well as provide hands-on experiences. YWSI helps girls develop an interest in these subjects by allowing them to work on a practical, interesting scientific problem using the latest computer technology.
