A Summer Academy in Computational Science and Engineering will teach sophisticated computer modeling and simulation skills to 40 Ohio high school students and ten teachers, thanks to a grant announced today by the Ohio Board of Regents.

Among the issues the committee plans to discuss are: a description of the approved competencies for the undergraduate minor in computational science; draft documents for the policy advisory committee discussing shared curricula; a draft of the governing board and advisory committee structure; updates on school projects; and National Science Foundation reviewer comments on an ATE proposal.
The High Performance Computing (HPC) division of OSC is sponsoring a Graduate Student Conference/Workshop at OSC on August 11 and 12, 2000. The purpose of the Conference/Workshop is to introduce graduate students from around the state to the resources and capabilities of OSC, as well as to exchange information about research projects being undertaken by other graduate students in Ohio.
Ohio is in good hands if State Science Day resembles any indication of the future.
Joseph M. Kessler, a junior at Carroll High School, received the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) Award for his exceptional project entered at State Science Day 1999. Kessler was one of three students chosen for this prestigious award.
James Estep and Christopher Lewis, both computer science majors at Shawnee State University, put their knowledge of computers to the test this summer. The Portsmouth residents spent eight weeks at the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) in Columbus learning about high performance networking.
"The experience we had this summer is definitely something we would not be able to learn in the classroom," Estep said. "I learned valuable organization and research skills, and a lot about advanced technologies."
Leslie Hiemenz, a doctoral candidate in Biomedical Engineering, was honored with the 1996-97 Link Foundation Fellowship in Advanced Simulation and Training.
Two surgeons from Central Ohio recently traveled to Nicaragua on a humanitarian mission to treat children with serious ear, nose and throat conditions. The National Science Foundation last week designated nearly $1 million to provide Ohio’s workforce with crucial training in computational modeling and simulation. The grant also supplies Ohio’s businesses with advanced Internet portals that will offer cyberinfrastructure resources companies need to compete in the global marketplace.
OSC has designed one of two new online training courses offered by the National Computational Science Alliance (NCSA) Partners for Advanced Computational Services (PACS). These parallel programming courses are designed for the high performance computing (HPC) user community.
